You are currently viewing Why specialist media should be part of every PR strategy

The media landscape is evolving with new dynamics and voices.

There is more fragmentation, with influence spread across more platforms. Digital publishers, podcasts, creators, and communities.

Independent media is on the rise, propelled as journalists launch their own Substack, newsletters and publications.

AI and search are impacting how editorial decisions are made and how stories reach people.

It’s exciting yet rapid – and perhaps moving faster than some PR strategies.

Amid speed and shifts, where is value truly earned for brands and businesses?

Part of the answer lies in specialist sector media, and if it’s not in your media mix, it should be.

When we talk about ‘influence’ in communications, it’s easy to default to reach and scale, but this doesn’t always translate into quality.

Specialist sector media goes beyond industry-wide trade (though does encompass it) into niche expertise. It excels in concentrated attention from audiences who will shift the dial for your business: the buyers, investors, retailers, category leads and analysts in your field.

It’s where industry opinion – however laser focused or technical – is formed and explored, ahead of reaching consumers. By the time something enters mainstream media, the industry has been discussing it for months: trends and innovation, insight and future outlooks, regulation and policy, people and leadership.

It’s the barometer for what’s happening now, what’s to come and why it matters.

Re-establish and remind

Right now, earned media is one of the most powerful levers a brand can pull, and specialist media is where you can invest in relevance and long-term authority. This was central to our recent gum leadership campaign for Mars Wrigley (full colour story here). We directly targeted confectionery retail buyers with expert insights on how to maximise the revenue opportunity presented by chewing gum. One specialised narrative, multiple media placements, a reach of 610,000 to the retail buying world.

Sector media in AI search

Critically, specialist media carries high trust, and credible media matters now more than ever – for human readers, but also as a strategic asset in AI search and discovery tools, which are increasingly shaping which brands are lost and found.

In an era obsessed with reach, influence isn’t about being seen by everyone. It’s about being seen by highly engaged audiences – those who make decisions and can move markets.
